TRAFFIC TASK FORCE
Mission:
To engage community members and Hawaii County Agencies in the effort to create safer streets in our neighborhoods by working together on Legislation and planned projects.
At the Solutions 2003: Neighborhoods in Action, 21 seminar participants attended the Traffic Workshop and confirmed that speeding - both through neighborhoods and on major roads was the number one concern, and brainstormed some potential solutions for future consideration including
- education,
- the need for a "highway patrol"
- more community involvement.
Objectives: To motivate Hawai`i Island residents to modify their own driving behavior and take other direct actions to reduce the incidence of speeding and threats to transportation safety and quality of life on our island.
Implementation Strategies: Creating and training of a Roadwatchers citizens group to monitor traffic behaviors, launching of traffic safety media campaigns that target truck safety, safe behaviors and attitudes, and Japanese visitors and new residents, analyzing conditions on key transportation corridors using the SARA Method (scanning, analysis, response, and assessment) to problem solve concerns raised in surveys of residents, property owners and visitors, and in site inspections.
Solutions?
By revisiting our objectives, goals and expected outcomes from Solutions 2003, we can begin to create a task driven mission with obtainable goals as a community with the help from County agencies and officers. By educating ourselves on the issues involving traffic in our community and what the public can do to be part of the Solution, communication is critical to achieve progress.
