NEIGHBORHOODS IN ACTION

SOLUTIONS 2003 EVALUATION SUMMARY

  • 100% of respondents to the seminar evaluation survey were in agreement that they learned "at least one thing" and "will continue their community involvement." This met the top two goals of the seminar.

In sum…
  • Many attendees were greatly moved and inspired by Mayor Kim's message about what we can accomplish through caring. Also, Mayor's Executive Assistant, Mr. Kenoi rated very high in updating the "Drug Programs" and what it will take for implementation of the monies allotted for the island of Hawai`i.

  • The presentations on our island top concerns were very informative. They gave insight to the departments responsibilities and duties. "What it takes to 'Bust' a drug house" most comprehensive in providing details - "the seven steps" in busting a drug house. Community members now have a better understanding on what, how and why it doesn't happen overnight.

  • One community member was very inspired by the "What it takes to Bust a Drug House presentation and set up a community meeting for the seven steps to be heard by more community members and at the same time organized a 'A'ole Drug sign waving on the main street.

  • What is Community Policing? It's a philosophy not a program. Community members still have mixed interpretations of what is the community policing philosophy. Why aren't all policemen CPO's working with the community on problem-solving? Whereas the CPO's feel communication and understanding problems within their community has improved within the past year.

  • Not enough time allocated to work towards finding solutions for all of the top three concerns in each workshop. Workshops needed to have a focused agenda on one (two at the most) of issues to find solutions.

  • More information was requested by the attendees at Solutions 2002 and those who attended again this year felt government and service agencies heard their requests. Those who did not attend last year also felt the information presented gave insights, preventive methods and helpful tips to assist in solving our safety issues.

  • Some attendees wanted more focus on:
    1) learning how to be more effective as a neighborhood watch group
    2) being heard by police and other authorities about our neighborhood's needs and concerns
    3) sharing ideas and solutions with other neighborhood watch groups
    4) working together with police and other authorities towards solutions to our problems
