October 28, 2003 Sign Waving

MAHALO MAHALO
FOR HUGS NOT DRUGS II
HAVE SIGN WILL WAVE!!!!

Mahalo and Mahalo to all Hawai`i Island residents who participated in the 2nd Islandwide "Hugs Not Drugs" Sign Waving on October 28, 2003. More than 2,100 of you (beating the July 16th count of 1,500) came out to say "no ice -- we want our neighborhoods back!" And, for the third time plan on early February 2004 - the exact date will be posted soon - to continue this wonderful way of sharing and caring.

In addition to helping raise awareness, these islandwide sign wavings help build community unity with residents getting to know their neighbors, sharing stories and learning the ins and outs of each respective community. It's as much about networking, sharing information and overcoming fear -- realizing we are not alone -- as it is about making a very visible public statement!

Mahalo for all the interaction of our businesses, support groups, public, private and charter schools and our government service agencies. Also, we are indebted to the news media for their continued support.

A very special Mahalo to the site coordinators who organized slogan and sign making gatherings and for making the sign waving sites a safe place to be on October 28, 2003. The following is a snap shot of what went on around the island:
