Youth Builders - Allen Salavea, Comprehensive Strategy Coordinator
  • Excellent Speaker and clear message (9)*
  • Pictures in presentations would be nice (9)
  • They've done a fabulous job of linking people and programs from many sectors and organizations. There are still so many opportunities for linking their work to a wider spectrum i.e. early childhood and parenting training. (9)
  • Well organized; well presented; informative - advise shorting it somewhat capturing selective highlights graphs? (5)
  • Using graduated students - most effective to speak their personal stories and how they have restored their lives. (5)
  • A little dry - doesn't appear to have an evaluation process. (7)
  • Awesome (5/6)
  • Very dry, academic presentation - way too many slides - kids were good (8)
  • Pleasant surprise to learn that younger people could organize and lead a conference (1)
  • Allen needs to just talk about the process and programs. The youths were great! Good opportunity for them to speak. (1)
  • Allen Salavea *like him (6)
  • Need them in West Hawaii (8)
  • Asking the youth for what their needs are and listening to them-making them part of the solution! (7)
  • Salavea's presentation not very good - other 3 very good. (7)
  • Wasn't aware of such a program. Very interesting. Hope they get the monies so their program can prosper. (4)
  • Right on!! Thanks for sharing your experiences, strengths and hopes that there are activities that we can create for our youth. Let's organize and strive for great leaders.(7)
  • Provide more instruction on how to assist existing Na Leo groups or create new groups in West Hawaii Schools. (2)
  • Need to "jazz up" the presentation. Have young people more involved in presentation. (1&2)
  • Great to have young people like these to be involved - a good program that defines direction. (9)
  • Collaborative effort and prevention are necessary. (2)
  • We need this for West Hawaii!! (7)
  • This is good, but a program for 5 year olds & up is needed. (6)
  • Concern re absence of program in West Hawaii (8)
  • Shame that West Hawaii fails to get involved (8)
  • More youth participation in presentations. (6)
  • Was not aware of this youth summit. Have you thought of going beyond the schools, neighborhood, and churches? (4)
  • We need one in Kona - West Hawaii (8)
  • It was great having the youth advisor and some youth here to talk about their projects.(1)
  • We need a County summer fun program for Youth 12, 13, and l14 (Intermediate school Age) most susceptible to beginning drugs. (Ice) (6)
  • I would like to explore a partnership collaboration with Allen's group and ours. They are the YMCA of the Big Island and Hawaii High School Rodeo Association (9) Contact: Pat Fitzgerald - phone: 885-8586 or Cell: 896-1549

Drug Court - Warren Kitaoka, Big Island Drug Court Coordinator
  • Needs to be more assertive in how to support legislative funding - but otherwise excellent (9)
  • Great program (9)
  • Powerful presentation (7)
  • Da bomb (5/6)
  • Short and sweet very powerful - wonderful! (8)
  • Learned about real life experiences from presenters and audience. (1)
  • Thank you for bringing the judge and graduates. It was very informative and loved the success stories. (1)
  • Good to know of successes - gives willing participants a second change (6)
  • I will try to attend/watch the Drug Court in Action - Thanks for inviting. (7)
  • Judge Ibarra excellent. Two drug-free graduates excellent (7)
  • Very impressed, especially with Judge Ibarra. "Hugs & Kisses with threat of jail". (4)
  • I'm happy we finally have a drug court here on Kona. At least we are growing and expanding for the positive for those who suffer form substance abuse and lack of self love.
  • Presentation too short. (1&2)
  • Interesting (2)
  • Get the awareness out - no nonsense (9)
  • Juvenile Drug Court in necessary to prevent drug use. (2)
  • Need more drug courts, plus juvenile courts. (6)
  • Interesting that program will be expanded to include juveniles and to hear of successes this far. (8)
  • Great program. Wonderful presenters. (8)
  • Brochure excellent; 2 graduates' participation/presentation excellent; Judge Ibarra's presentation and question/answer excellent!! (6)
  • Need graduates of BIDC to talk with high school students (1)
  • Wish there were more time for more questions. Many are not aware of many areas whether drug users or victims. (2/3)
  • Mahalo to the drug court graduates for coming to talk and answer questions. It was great to see successes!!
  • Definitely need Juvenile Drug Court. (6)

Community Based Program - Jay Kimura, Prosecuting Attorney
  • Mahalo for legislative update

Responding to Solutions' Top Issues - Larry Mahuna, Police Chief
  • We need to fully-man the Hawaii County Police Department! (7)
  • Samo Samo (8)

Youth Mentoring Program - Leomi Bergknut, Hawaii Community College
  • Great! (6)
  • Excellent program (8)
  • Excellent program. This program should be Island wide. Need more youth mentoring programs as the Fire Department. Leomi needs to tighten up her introducing presenters. Excellent presentation by fire fighter and 3 youths excellent *Sergio. (7)
  • Need more opportunities.(9)
  • Emergency Response Academy very proud of everyone finishing program. We need to have programs like this. (2)

Community Policing Updates
  • Beautiful display of emotion. (9)
  • Lt. Sanborn excellent-hopefully our police department trains all officers as the CPOs are. (6)
  • CPOs are cool! (1)
  • I'd like to see more publicity given on Community Policing Programs. (2)

Task Force Groups

Traffic
  • This is just the group I had to go to; to help me really realized that I was putting myself as a statistic to be in the ".7 second collision". I think this session is going to make a big impact on my life and lesson my driving. It has changed my whole outlook on speed. (7)
  • Some excellent ideas were shared. (8)
  • Where is the magic wand when you need one! Each area has their own needs - not necessarily will work in another - but great ideas! (8)
  • Small group with repetition - handle as one - noise/talking loud a disturbance detriment - input good, next steps important. (6)
  • I learned of various ways to solve speed in my community. And ideas to use. (4)
  • Please get some of the stuff we all agreed on done - signs speed boards - rumble strips. (1)
  • We need to get some Solutions from all these meetings. i.e. speeding - among neighborhoods - one way was to approach the neighbor i.e. friends about speeding. (2/3)
  • Need more time. (1)

Property Crimes
  • It was very helpful for me as this sharing with the group is going to help me with my Community. (4)
  • Solutions that the group can come up with in very short time are average/in-the-box ideas that the police/prosecutors/etc. are already aware of. (2)
  • Not enough time allotted for this segment. It was too rushed. (3)
  • Fun as well as informative. (2)
  • Using CPOs was good - a part of / interaction with various community reps (other problems) (9)
  • Not enough time (2)
  • We had good CPOs helping our task group - John Pagay and Les Inapuku. Mahalo to them. (9)
  • Better instruction should begin on how to proceed. (2)

Animal Control
  • Need new laws ASAP, current barking law ineffective (6)
  • Minimum fines $50-100. Change the County Contract with Humane Society so they will be the enforcement agency for dogs and cats. (6)

Drug Group
  • For those of us who focused on the drug problem, it would be useful to have a session to share what various communities are doing and how we can support each other, work together, and learn from each other. (9)
  • I really learned things I didn't know. The entire session opened my eyes to the possibilities I can share with my neighbors (information wise) (4)

Overall
  • Video/PowerPoint on "Hugs Not Drugs!" was terrific (9)
  • Would like more focus on proven activities and audience participation or volunteering to get these ideas implemented. Sign-up lists for business' that want to give tours, host job shadow or mentorship's. Sign-up lists for volunteer drivers or adult role models. Enthusiasm is high - would be good to capture interest for follow-up later. Perhaps place to collect donations or silent action to raise funds for participating groups in this conference. (9)
  • Disconnect between Task Force Groups and all of the good presentations throughout the day. I'd like to have drug-issue group for afternoon. Mahalo for the information and all your hard work (9)
  • Housekeeping: air-condition and sound system improvements needed. (5)
  • Include: professionals/experts from medical sector to speak on health hazards of (i.e. drugs) present and future (long-term) effects in families, young & old alike. (5)
  • Great info (3)
  • Let's get some new topics for next year - Hugs video was super! (8)
  • Good job Aunty Lil (8)
  • Very interesting line up - a little better than last year. Maybe have show case of what communities are doing for next year! (1)
  • Let's keep moving forward! Keep up the good work! (5)
  • Very good conference - very informative - a lot of great work being done. (7)
  • Task Force Groups - Great! (6)
  • Should have mandatory drug testing from Intermediate and High School - randomly! If they test positive they go to juvenile drug court and parents get fined -$500. Ice Drug test done by school nurse. Fined $250 marijuana (1st offence). (6)
  • Overall, the day was a success and worth attending. (4)
  • I'm new to Hawaii-this is the kind of info I needed to hear in order to help and get resources and help for our community. (7)
  • Mahalo for putting such a wonderful program on for Hawaii community (5)
  • This day was such a perfect day to be here to learn and be educated. Wish more people could come and make a difference. (4)
  • I really want to be involved in this next year and maybe one day be a part of it. Have more time for questions and answers because I think this year we ha a lot of awesome questions that make people widen their thinking and other questions that confirm people's ideas and concerns. Thanks for the drug kits. Nice to that it is (7)
  • Much more interesting to hear challenges/success of new/unknown programs rather than hearing the typical speeches of public figures. (2)
  • Good job to Aunty Lilian!! (8)
  • I found the seminar Very Useful in many areas. (2)
  • Appreciate the effort in organization and preparation with the packet (a lot of good info). Our police officers and administration displayed the high professional commitment to their field. A great show with people that care. Time well spent. (9)
  • Great update on what's planned for drug court. What kinds of programs are in Kona? Little information was highlighted of what's available. What are the plans for the money that was allocated to the county for the "ice" war? (4 million?) (1)
  • I gained a lot of information in the today's seminar being my first attendance out of the three seminars. (2)
  • Lil did a fabulous job organizing this event. Good subject content. (7)
  • Need to address the smallest victims - there is a very high number of children that are removed from the "ice" houses and they are neglected, with scabies ukus etc - they need a crisis center that can help clean up, cure and stabilize then they possible be placed in foster care. We have no such center for these victims of "ice' epidemic" and it is a problem that has not been exposed to the community. (7)
  • I came with 2 specifics to accomplish and I was very pleased. I made many contacts get a list together to help organize those who wish to volunteer with those who want to volunteer. (9)
  • Very Good Seminar. (2)
  • Drug testing program should be in all schools, including teachers. It should be random, but frequent enough so each person is tested at least twice a year. Penalties should be mandatory community service.(6)
  • Drug Screening talk by Bruce Makarewicz was informative. How to get on-site linking program implemented for children? Problem - test kit is pricey. (8)
  • Too bad Kona people like to complain but fail to step forward to help make solutions. (8)
  • Excellent speakers. Need to have better PA system for participant's questions. Total session quite long but necessary! (6)
  • As an overall seminar I think the leaders and various committees did an awesome job in putting it together. I have learned from this seminar and hope to come to the next one. (4)
  • It's a little long but if something comes out of it i.e. legislation - action - performance then its worth it. (1)
  • We have met to begin to solve some problems with the Hawaiian homelands. In the near future we will get our neighborhood back. (2/3)
  • I appreciated the question and answer periods after each prevention. Hooray for sharing information of what's been working - the positive outcomes and successes!!! (1)
  • Great conference even though the air conditioning went out. (3)
